The Sabbatical

The Sabbatical - Time Out

I planned to take time out, to allow myself some space and recovery time.

We live in an age where flexible working and a healthy work-life balance are becoming increasingly important.

It was important to me.

To travel. To rekindle friendships and relationships.

So I did just that. I've loved every moment of it.

But you know the hardest part of taking time out ...

The emotional disconnect with your business / profession.

I'm sure there are pros and cons to all sabbatical arrangements but when it is your own business (and you get to call the shots), you get to decide for how long and to what extent you retreat.

While you're in the rhythm of work / business, you build pace and gain momentum, creating a snowball effect; attracting attention.

You're visible, you're seen, you're remembered.

So yes, I guess there's a downside to taking a sabbatical (out of sight, out of mind and all that).

But there comes a time when you're ready to turn your back on algorithms and 'should dos' and that's OK because, contrary to popular belief, it isn't how many times you show up that is remembered but the quality of content you put out there... that's the ultimate attraction.

No one cares if you've been hiding under a rock as the truth is, everyone is too busy navigating their own life to notice.

I'm glad to be back and do you know what?

There's a huge plus side to all this that outweighs any negativity.

I have a new 'joie de vivre'. A new sparkle in my eyes. A new zest for life and for my businesses.

That has to be good, right?

Basically, it's a question of whether you have what it takes to run with it (and to have a system in place as a back up for while your'e away).

Ask yourself

  1. How Passionate am I?

Are you an all consuming,

the world needs me,

and I can do this kind of passionate?

  1. Are you self-motivated?

Do you have the inner drive to take action and use that passion and your own initiative to pursue your goals?

If not ... take time to reconsider.

Self motivation is what pushes you to keep going - to see your vision become a reality; for your family, for you.

  1. Do You have the Power of a Positive Outlook?

Making a list of 'Pros' and 'Cons' can help.

When you start your business it is really helpful to have someone you know, like and trust to bounce ideas around with.

To prompt discussion, try doing a SWOT analysis to help you consider the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

And as for the emotional disconnect?

It's only temporary... you'll reconnect when needs must. You simply have to put yourself in to the 'Recovery Position' and create a new way forward.
