Your Brain Sabotages Change
Why Your Brain Sabotages Change (and How to Fix It)!
If you’re anything like me, you have a thousand ideas scribbled down in notebooks.
The very first page of my new notebook says, "I'm a Creative. I always need a notebook with me to capture my ideas and note my new learning".
My latest achievement has been creating my own Branded App which I was on the verge of promoting - my journey was even going to be in the press.
Anyway ... It always starts out exciting… until it’s not.
The Dilemma
Just like that, the platform I used to created my website and Branded App came under new management and the prices went sky high! I am not one to lose heart but I knew it was time to jump ship.
So the headache of actually figuring out the next steps, in order to continue and setting up the tech part all over again, began!
You know how it feels… like brain fog when all you want is a bit of clarity and confidence.
So many ideas swirling around your head about what to create, so many opportunities out there… but you just can’t decide which one to move forward with.
The Confidence Dip
Sticking to one idea feels limiting …
• Have I made the right decision or is this a complete waste of my time?
• Will I stay focused and consistent enough to see this through?
• Can I be the person I need to be to make this work?
The doubts and fears build up.
So you lose focus, you lose motivation and you lose time thinking of the hundred other ideas that you could be working on instead.
The truth is… it’s not your fault, or mine, that this overthinking keeps happening.
It’s actually neuroscience!
The Neuroscience Behind Overthinking
I was talking to my friend and associate Dr Linda Khalid of MindComplete about this ...
Your brain is biologically programmed to lose confidence every time you start a new idea. We all go through it!
You start on a high and then slip into all the doubts and worries that convince you that you should go back to square one ... or, as in my case, there may even be a very real business decision driving it; either way it can lead to a case of severe overthinking!
The cycle repeats itself over and over.
Let's explore the research behind this.
'The Dip' is referred to in James Clear's Atomic Habits. A worthy read. I won't go too deep into this in my blog but if, like me, you love to delve into the science behind your experiences or reasoning, then click the link above.
I remember exploring this notion during my MBA dissertation. (If you're currently navigating a transition, it's worth exploring as it can help significantly with fortitude and resilience):
The Emotional Cycle of Change (Kelley and Conner, 1979), maps this exact rollercoaster; the euphoric start, the crash into doubt and the fear (or determination) that drives you.
But it can also impede you.
We need to recognise this.
Recognising Unhelpful Thinking Triggers
We need to recognise the trigger for unhelpful thinking patterns.
I'm sure you'll agree that we're part of an age where information is readily available but so much so, that it becomes a sea of noise and we find ourselves more desperate than ever for expert advice to help cut through the noise.
And that's exactly why I created the Overthinking Toolkit.
Not from a place of having it all figured out, but from living this cycle on repeat and finally deciding to do something about it.
Because what I've learned through the research, through my own restarts, and through rebuilding from scratch more than once, is that the overthinking isn't the problem. It's the lack of a clear, simple framework to move through it.
The Overthinking Toolkit aims to provide that framework.
Who is the Overthinking Toolkit For?
It's designed for the creative thinkers, the idea collectors, the ones who start strong and then stall (or fizzle out just slightly when all they want to do is perform at their best), not because they're not capable, but because their brain is doing exactly what it's biologically wired to do.
This is for you if ...
Your mind feels constantly busy and you can't switch off.
You get stuck in a thought-loop and waste energy second guessing.
You want something simple to help steady yourself and get on with your day.
So instead of waiting for the fog to lift on its own… let's clear it together.

What does the Toolkit consist of?
The toolkit is a 5-Step Reset and is organised as follows:
Thought Capture: Your Current Situation
Designed to help you understand your starting point; how things are for you right now and what’s occurring in your thoughts, feelings, actions, reactions etc.
Tool 1: The Daily Planner and Habit Tracker
A practical tool to interrupt spiralling thoughts and give them a safe place to land.
Tool 2: The Self-Care Pause
A double-page resource that emphasises the importance of Self Care. Helps to stabilise your own patterns of behaviour.
Tool 3: Reset Your Emotions
A poster-style resource showing you ways to regulate your mind and body when spirals feel overwhelming.
Tool 4: Thought Interruption
A practical tool aiming to interrupt unhelpful thoughts, in the moment.
Tool 5: Regulate Before You Detonate!
Focuses on making the changes stick with simple breathing practices that can be done any time.
Each tool builds on the last.
It's designed to dip into rather than doing it all at once (unless you want to, of course)!
